Bears are roaming around downtown Montreal. Really. It wouldn’t be unusual to find a variety of these furry guys wandering out of the Beaudry metro station at 12 a.m. on a Saturday, clad in leather or wearing suits and ties, or perhaps a T-shirt and jeans. But don’t worry – they won’t claw your eyes out.
I should probably start by saying that the term “bear” refers not only to a massive, four-legged animal associated with brute strength (and, to some, cuddly cuteness), but also to a lgbtq+ subculture whose members have distinctive characteristics in both appearance and personality, and whose origins meet back to ‘80s San Francisco.
In the late ‘80s, Bear Magazine, a publication out of the San Francisco area, popularized the image of the muscular, blue-collar bearded gentleman and drew a fan base not only from the gay community of rural America but also gay communities abroad. Many vacation destinations claim to be the happiest place on Earth, but in my experience, Provincetown’s Bear Week has an outstanding claim to the title. For eight glorious days and nights, the Cape Cod resort becomes bigger, furrier, and friendlier than usual when the burly, hairy gay dudes known as bears enjoy a week of summer fun. I especially recommend walking down Commercial Street as the various bear packs top to tea dance on wrestling singlet night.

So when the opportunity arose to check out Eagle LA, I jumped on it. If you&#;re a female, the very first thing you&#;ll notice is 1) you&#;ll likely be the only girl there and 2) wonder where all these big, strapping men have been hiding in Silver Lake. Off Santa Monica with a valet parking at night I was the only girl that overnight and frankly, quite loved it. As with most gay bars, I was welcomed and treated with courtesy and deference.
