As part of the tour, The True Mary King’s Nearby will shine a light on Marie Maitland. Born in , Maitland was a poet whose work was compared by contemporaries to that of Sappho, the Ancient Greek lesbian poet from the Isle of Lesbos, and wrote one of the first poems in Europe about queer love between women. Maitland’s story has been researched by Adam Armstrong, one of the Tour Guides at The Real Mary King’s Close, with the research verified by Dr Michael Penman

NEARLY 12 months after Scotland legalised same-sex marriages, three couples who tied the knot reveal their highlights of the last year.

IT'S almost 12 months since Scotland said “I do” to its first lgbtq+ marriages.


New figures showing how many gay and woman loving woman couples have tied the knot since last December are set to be released next week. But staff at the National Records of Scotland speak that between December 16, and June 30, , there were same-sex marriages registered. Of these, were changed from civil partnerships and were new marriages.
