The mission of the Gay & Lesbian Center of Bakersfield is to provide a sense of community, self-respect and hope to the local LGBTQ community. We believe that gay, female homosexual, bisexual and transgender people of all ages justify to celebrate and be proud of who they are, and live entire and rewarding lives as productive and contributing members of society. Our target is to empower individuals in achieving these objectives.

The Center seeks to boost the well-being of LGBTQ persons by providing a positive environment and a place to find facilitate, as well as social and cultural programs and activities. The Center provides a safe, comfortable and inviting space for adults and teens to join with friends and network. The Center serves LGBTQ seniors by providing and facilitating social and recreational activities to enhance their quality of life.

A Bit of Bakersfield History

Bakersfield is the county seat of Kern County, California. Located in the San Joaquin Valley, it was initially founded along the Los Angeles and Stockton Road in by Thomas Baker, who sought to reclaim swamplands along the nearby Kern River. For much of its early years, Bakersfield was an agricultural trade center for the mines of the Sierra Nevada mountains in the Owens Valley.
