To add on that did women ever have crushes on him and view him as a sex symbol in the 70’s? I’m sure some did but I’m talking about in general? Like Elton John posters in teen magazines?
Or did people not view him in that way and just saw him as a talented, huge star?

Here’s an NME article from with Freddie Mercury going on log as stating he’s “gay as a daffodil,” but playing it coy when the reporter pursues that line of questioning further. Queen didn’t do much urge after the early years because they were slammed by the media so much and because Freddie was a shy and private person offstage - the few interviews he did provide later on were not very revealing at all.

I recall when the song came out, but was too juvenile to have a idea of what being homosexual was. Anyhoo, assuming I am not starting from a false premise, if, as I am told, Elton John’s gayness was not common knowledge in his 70’s heyday, what then did people construct of a song where he is referring to himself as a “bitch”? Did that clue everyone in, and if not, why not? Did bitch have a different interpretation back then?

Maybe I’m the only person who thought this, but when I was younger, I assumed he was singing about a woman, from her point of view. This belief was compounded in my slowly maturing brain when I heard Elton perform a duet of this song with Tina Turner.
