Early s: Harris met Burtka met through a joint friend.
The pair co-penned a essay about their relationship for Out magazine, in which Harris wrote about his first impression of Burtka.
"I ran into my friend Kate one day and she was with this brooding, James Dean–type guy in a leather jacket who gave me the head nod and then turned away," he wrote. "I assumed he was Kate's boyfriend and said, 'Nicely done.' And she said, 'David? He's not playing on my team, but he has a boyfriend.'

Neil Patrick Harris has weighed in on the debate over straight actors playing gay characters.
The actor, who came out as queer in , says he doesn't see an issue. In a Thursday interview with U.K.'s The Times, Harris shared his thoughts on the comments made by screenwriter Russell T Davies, who said he is opposed to linear actors playing gay roles.
"I’m not one to vault onto labeling. As an actor, you certainly desire you can be a visible option for all kinds of different roles," the year-old Emmy nominee said, using the nature he played on "How I Met Your Mother" -- serial womanizer Barney Stinson -- to illustrate his point.
"I played a character for nine years that was nothing love me," Harris said before referencing Davies' series "Queer as Folk," which starred three straight actors as gay men.
