LGBTIQA+ films have grow somewhat mainstream in the 21st century. ‘Brokeback Mountain’ () was a gamechanger that missed the Oscar; ‘Blue Is the Warmest Colour’ was laden with issues but won the Palme d’Or; ‘Carol’ won critical acclaim; ‘Moonlight’ () won the Oscar for Best Picture in a rather dodgy way in the history of the award reveal even if its Black director did not. ‘Beats per Minute’ () was a huge strike, internationally; and so did ‘Portrait of a Lady on Fire’ (). You could argue that these were mostly gay or womxn loving womxn films, and you would not be wrong. Trans films had trans characters mostly played by straight men in costumes with a few exceptions. As far as LGBT films of are concerned, this spread is still limited to gay, bi, and lesbian films, with a smattering of trans films.

Films from major studios included more LGBTQ characters onscreen for longer amounts of time in compared to the year prior, according to an annual analyze conducted by the Homosexual and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). But the organization said there's still progress to be made, especially when it comes to transgender and attracted to both genders representation.
The 9th Annual Studio Responsibility Index included films from eight major studios: Lionsgate, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures, STX Films, Merged Artists Releasing, Universal Pictures, the Walt Disney Studios and Warner Bros.
Of the 44 films those studios released in , % included LGBTQ+ characters, a 4% increase from Though there were fewer LGBTQ characters overall — 20 compared to 50 in — the organization attributed that to the steep decline in films released that year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
